Stratiolaelaps scimitus predatory mites for ant keeping

Stratiolaelaps scimitus is a soil-dwelling predatory mite known in ant keeping as an ant-farm cleaner or “anti-mite”. It is a live culture used to address small organisms in the substrate. It is worth considering when you understand both the problem and the conditions in your ant farm.

Where the predatory mite works

Stratiolaelaps scimitus lives and hunts in the upper soil layer. The species is used in biological control, including against fungus gnat larvae and thrips pupae. It works by finding suitable prey and feeding on it.

The culture needs loose, moderately moist substrate. A dry, bare outworld and a moist soil habitat provide very different living conditions, so the design of your ant farm matters when choosing it.

Using the culture in a formicarium

First identify the organism you are dealing with and where it lives. The name “anti-mite” does not mean that the culture eliminates every mite or removes any parasite attached to an ant. Documented use against soil pests cannot automatically be applied to every infestation in an ant colony.

Choose an application method that suits the formicarium while maintaining the moisture conditions your ants need. Continue monitoring the colony and keeping the feeding area clean: a living predator needs a suitable habitat and time to work.
