Why watch harvester ants?

Seed gathering is an important part of Messor life. At the feeding area, you can see which grains attract the workers and how they manage to carry them. Harvester ant workers vary in size, so even routine feeding offers a reason to take a closer look at individual ants.

A colony rewards quiet, regular observation. Noticing changes from day to day is more rewarding than repeatedly disturbing the nest to make the outworld look busy.

Planning a home ant farm

Provide a separate feeding area and access to water. Seed stores need a dry area, while nest moisture should suit the colony’s needs. Position food where leftovers can be removed without taking apart the living section of the formicarium.

Keep the farm on a stable surface away from direct sunlight, heaters and vibration. There is no need to rush into a larger nest: choose its size for the current colony and expand as it grows.
